iOS 11 Features

Following the start of WWDC, Apple has officially announced iOS 11. While a good deal of focus in recent months has been on the iPhone 8, the next-generation of iPhone would be nothing without the next generation of operating system to complement it. So, now we are going to look at what Apple is promising with iOS 11.

Features of iOS 11 :

All the new features of iOS 11 firmware as shown in WWDC 2017 as listed below with detailed information.

  • Drag and Drop

Apple introduces a new dock for the iPad, customizable, for easy access to frequently used apps and documents. An overhaul to the app switcher allows you to switch between active app pairs using Slide Over and Split View. Drag and Drop can be used across the whole of the iPad, allowing for easier copy and paste. 

  • Files App 

A new files app on the iPhone and iPad allows you to access all files, regardless of whether they are stored on the device or in the cloud, from one place.

  • Apple Pencil

The Apple Pencil gets some improvements, including easier access to the Notes app with a tap of the pencil on the lock screen of the iPad. Pencil can also now be used for inline drawing, is integrated with several apps, allows Markup to be used on screenshots, in Safari browser, and much more besides.

  • Scan and Sign

The Notes app is a given a new feature called Scan and Sign, allowing documents to be scanned for, trimmed up and the glare reduced, allowing you to use Pencil to sign it and print it out

  • iCloud Sync for Messages

Now that Messages is available across devices, conversations can now be synced through iCloud to provide continuity

  • Apple Pay

At long last, we can integrate P2P payments in Apple Pay Cash, an iMessage app. Payments can be made and Siri can be used to make the payments with the payment details already stored in Wallet. Any money received can then be used for whatever you would use your Apple Pay account for

  • Messages App Drawer

iMessage apps and Sticker packs are now easily accessible from the bottom of the interface

  • Siri 

More changes for Siri in the shape of machine learning allows Siri to follow your questions and conversations instead of just giving one reply. A new feature allows for translation into English, French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and German and will also offer suggestions for words when you are typing in the context of Apple News Content. Siri voices also get a more natural tone.

  • Better Camera and Photo App

The camera is a major thing for Apple and new changes in iOS 11 include optical image stabilization for portrait mode photos, along with HDR and True Tone flash. New compression techniques are introduced, allowing photos and 4K videos to be saved in less space on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Better location tracking, changes to Memories and new features in Live Photos, including trimming and setting frames, are other new features.

  • Major Redesign of the Lock Screen, Notification Center and Control Center 

The Control Center becomes a tall page with widgets, looking like a remote control and on one single page.  3D Touch can be used on the page settings to get more details. The Notification Center and Lock screen are one entity featuring rich intelligent notifications

  • One-Hand Keyboard Control 

A simple touch and hold on the Emoji key will bring up the option for one-handed typing which will bring the keys nearer to your thumb

  • Apple Maps

New features in the Maps apps includes indoor mapping support for airports and large malls and lane change information, as well as information on speed limits

  • CarPlay

CarPlay gets support for Do Not Disturb, stopping drivers from being disturbed by notifications and ensuring the scree stays off. If you attempt to turn it on whilst in DnD mode, you will be advised that you shouldn’t. You can customize DnD to let specific contacts get through though.

  • AirPlay 2 and HomeKit 

The Home app gets a boost with a Speakers feature that will work with several well-known manufacturers of speakers. AirPlay 2 gives users multi-room control for audio over smart speakers and Apple TV users can set their devices up as central hubs for every speaker that is connected to it.

  • Social Sharing on Apple Music

Apple Music gets friends integration, allowing users to see what their friends are listening to and to have Shazam add to a Music playlist automatically. Also, the MusicKit framework allows developers to work with Apple Music in their apps.

  • App Store 

The app store is getting a complete redesign for the first time ever, looking very much like Apple Music. New features include App of the Day, Daily List and Game of the Day, along with a dedicated section for in-app purchases

  • Changes to QuickType keyboard

iOS 11 Release Date and Download Availability :

iOS 11 download will be released to the public in September 2017 but, for now, developers can download iOS 11 beta 1 for testing and the public beta will be released to those on the Beta program later in June.
